Abstract
Taboo language is a local culture that is very important as the identity of each region. Due to developments, culture in the form of taboo language is starting to be abandoned by Balinese people. This also happened in Menyali Village. New studies related to taboo language are needed for language revitalization. Therefore, this research discusses taboo in the Balinese language spoken in Menyali Village. This study was designed as a descriptive qualitative study. The aim of this study was to find out taboo word, form of taboo, and reference of taboo. Data collection in this study was carried out through in-depth interviews with three informants. It was supported by an interview guide as instrument. The obtained data were primary data and analysed qualitatively based on Milles & Huberman (1992) theory. This study showed that there were forty-five (45) taboo words in Menyali Village. These taboo words were classified into three domains based on the Tri Hita Karana three causes of happiness in Hindu beliefs in Bali, namely fourteen (14) words in Parhyangan human relationship with God, twenty-four (24) words in Pawongan human relations with other humans, and seven (7) words in Palemahan human relationship with the natural environment. There were two (2) forms of taboo, namely taboo names and certain words were twenty-five (25) words, and swearing words were twenty (20) words. There were fourteen (14) references of taboo namely parent’s name, God’s name, animal’s name, the name of person who died, genitals, sexual activity, certain professions, characteristics and conditions, illness, personal pronouns, certain activities, parts of body, names of objects, and bodily function.
