Abstract
This study aims to examine the phenomenon of code-switching produced by beginner-level students at Slukat Learning Center Foundation, focusing on the types of code-switching by using Hoffman's (1991) theory and how code-switching occurs by using Matrix Language Frame (MLF) by Myers-Scotton (2006). This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with the students' beginner level students as the subject. Data collection techniques use observation and digital recorders. Data analysis uses a mixing method (coding) from the theory of Creswell and Creswell (2017) and interactive data analysis by Miles and Huberman (1994). The research findings revealed that the type of intra-sentential code-switching is most actively used. Meanwhile, inter-sentential is rarely used, and beginner students do not use tag-switching at all. It was also found that beginner students were more active in producing code-switching using Indonesian as the matrix language instead of English. This study provides insights into the patterns and preferences of code-switching among beginner learners, contributing to understanding language use in informal educational settings.
