Abstract
The Merdeka curriculum, designed to provide more flexibility in the teaching and learning process, supports implementing innovative learning methods such as Project-based Learning. PjBL is a learning approach that emphasizes learning through collaborative projects. However, the application of the PjBL method has not been widely used by teachers in primary schools nationwide. Thus, this study aims to see how the procedure of implementing Project Based Learning in learning English to young learners, knowing the challenges teachers face in implementing Project Based Learning, and the strategies used to overcome these challenges. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method, and in collecting data, researchers conducted observations using an observation checklist and then continued by conducting interviews with English teachers in grades 3A and 3B. The results showed that English teachers in both classes could implement PjBL using six syntaxes. The syntax for PjBL implementation is as follows: 1) starting with important questions, 2) designing a plan for the project, 3) creating a schedule, 4) monitoring students and projects, 5) assessing results, 6) evaluating the experience. While implementing PjBL in English learning, both teachers experienced the same obstacle, namely difficulties in time, because English subjects are in the hour after naps. In this case, students need time to prepare and restore student focus on learning. To overcome the obstacles experienced by both teachers, they use several strategies, such as waking up students early, and if the time is up but the project has not been completed, the teacher will give additional time next week by giving a time limit in working with this, students will work on the project optimally.
