Abstract

Identifying Balinese lexicons used in rice farming is very important because it is part of efforts to revitalize these lexicons. The Balinese language used in Penebel sub-district is often associated with culture which has an important role as a means of communication. Considering that language and culture have a close and important relationship, to maintain cultural relations between the older and younger generations, as well as the death of a language, especially in relation to the topics to be discussed, language revitalization efforts must be implemented immediately. This research aims to identify the lexicons used in rice planting activities, classify the status of these lexicons, and analyze various efforts to revitalize lexicons in Penebel sub-district. The data collection that were used in this study were observation, questionnaires and interviews. And were analyzed descriptively. The results of this research indicate that there were 97 lexicons which were classified into 7 categories, namely; agricultural tools, animals, agricultural ceremonies, plants, irrigation, harvesting, and rice planting activities. The status of the lexicons are in threatened level as suggested by Lewis & Clark (2011). The process of revitalizing the lexicon has been carried out by speakers of the language, by schools and local governments.
