Abstract

Critical reading is an essential skill in English language learning, yet it often receives limited attention in classroom practice. At SMA Negeri 1 Kuta Utara, grade XI students demonstrated low performance in interpreting, evaluating, and reflecting on reading texts. This study aimed to examine the effect of Digital Storytelling (DST) on students’ critical reading competence and explore their responses to its implementation. An explanatory sequential mixed-method design was used with two classes selected through cluster random sampling: an experimental group taught using DST and a control group taught using conventional methods. Data were collected through post-tests, classroom observations, and student interviews. DST was delivered through multimedia narratives combining visuals, audio, music, and contextual topics to promote critical engagement. Post-test results showed that the experimental group achieved significantly higher scores, indicating improvements in literal, interpretive, and evaluative reading skills. Observations and interviews revealed positive student responses, with increased motivation, deeper understanding, and enhanced reflective thinking. Students found DST more engaging and interactive than traditional methods, while multimedia elements supported focus, analysis, and connections to real-life contexts. In conclusion, DST is an effective approach for enhancing both critical reading competence and student engagement in English learning. However, the study’s limited sample size and short duration may affect the generalizability of findings. Further research is recommended to explore its long-term impact and broader application in different educational contexts.
