Abstract

This study describes the types of reinforcement and punishment used by an English teacher toward young learners and examines students’ responses to these behavior management strategies. The research was conducted at Sunrise School Bali, Kerobokan, employing a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected through interviews, classroom observations, teacher reflections, and student questionnaires, with purposive sampling involving one English teacher and 20 students. The findings reveal that the teacher primarily applied positive reinforcement, such as verbal praise, stickers, and symbolic rewards, to encourage desirable behaviors, including active participation, attentiveness, and compliance with classroom rules. In addition, punishment in the form of verbal corrections and warnings was used to manage disruptive behaviors and reinforce classroom expectations. Students generally responded positively to both strategies, demonstrating increased engagement, improved focus, and better behavioral regulation during English learning activities. However, the study indicates that excessive reliance on external motivators may hinder the development of students’ intrinsic motivation. While reinforcement effectively promoted immediate behavioral compliance, it occasionally shifted students’ attention from meaningful learning processes to reward-oriented behavior. Therefore, the study emphasizes the importance of a balanced approach that integrates reinforcement with constructive feedback to support students’ self-regulation, curiosity, and long-term interest in learning English. Overall, this study supports the implementation of culturally and developmentally appropriate reinforcement and punishment strategies in early English language education. It also highlights the significance of reflective teaching practices in optimizing classroom management and fostering a positive learning environment in international school contexts.
