Abstract

The increasing reliance on online news websites as a primary source of information has highlighted the importance of ensuring that digital information is accessible to all users, including individuals with disabilities. As websites that are inherently visual, users with visual impairments often encounter barriers when accessing news content due to inaccessible web designs. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the accessibility compliance of the three most visited news websites in Indonesia namely Detik, Kompas, and Tribunnews with particular emphasis on accessibility for users with visual impairments. This study employed a descriptive accessibility evaluation approach using the Website Accessibility Conformance Evaluation Method (WCAG-EM). The evaluation focused on selected WCAG 2.2 Level A and AA success criteria relevant to visual impairments. The homepage and one representative news article page from each website were evaluated using three automated accessibility evaluation tools namely WAVE, axe Devtools, and Siteimprove Accessibility Checker. The result indicate that all evaluated websites contain accessibility violations that may hinder access for users with visual impairments. Among the identified issues, inaccessible keyboard navigation was the most frequently occurring violation, followed by insufficient color contrast and missing alternative text. Many of these violations were found in advertisement components and news card structure. Among the three evaluated websites, Tribunnews demonstrated the best accessibility performance, followed by Kompas, while Detik exhibited the highest number of accessibility violations. In conclusion, none of the evaluated websites fully complied with the selected WCAG 2.2 success criteria. The findings emphasized the need for greater attention to accessibility during the design, development, and maintenance of online news websites. This study provides practical recommendations for improving accessibility and contributes to promoting more inclusive digital news services in Indonesia.
