Abstract

This study aims to develop character education materials based on speech acts normativity inserted into EFL materials for senior high school students, and evaluate its validity, practicality, and whether this product has a significant effect on students’ performance test, both in English proficiency and character building. This research was conducted based on the ADDIE model development. There were several research instruments in this study: questionnaires, a document checklist, unstructured interviews, pretest and posttest, observations, and rubrics. This research was conducted in SMAN 1 Gunungsari. The data from questionnaires, unstructured interviews, rubrics, and observations were analyzed qualitatively. The data obtained from the tests were analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statistics, the normal distribution test, and a nonparametric test. The questionnaires involved five classes or 175 students and 25 teachers as respondents for the needs analysis. The findings revealed that 97.9% of the respondents need and require speech acts normativity as the basis of character building. The prototype of this product is based on the current curriculum. Content and instructional experts validated that this product is good material and relevant to the current learning demands. Instructors and student users evaluated that the practicality of this research product is high and applicable to current needs. For the implementation phase, it involved three classes, with 83 students involved. In the unstructured interviews, 5 students participated. Based on the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, the p-value is 0.00, which is below 0.05. It pointed out that there is a significant difference between the pre- and post-test mean scores. To find out the effect size, it used Match-Pairs Rank Biserial Correlation (r) was used, which resulted in 0.87. Based on Cohen’s Value Criteria, 0.87 is a large effect size. Thus, it is deduced that this product can increase the students’ English proficiency. The observation result indicates that character building has excellent development.
