Abstract

Disabilities students have to get a same right in term of education, because of their disability they need special treatment to assist them in achieving their goals in learning. This qualitative case study aims at identifying the implementation of English teacher’s teaching techniques in teaching writing to deaf students in SLB Negeri 1 Gianyar in academic year 2019/2020. The study was conducted in 10B (deaf students) class at SLB Negeri 1 Gianyar. The subject of this research was an English teacher who has been trusted to teach deaf students in SLB Negeri 1 Gianyar. The data were gathered by observations and interviews. The results showed that the English teacher used several techniques in teaching writing to deaf students including using picture technique, using reading technique, brainstorming technique, practical writing technique, translation, and games. Those techniques were implemented by the used of sign language and used examples that match the daily lives of deaf students to facilitate deaf students in understanding the material delivered during the teaching and learning activities. Learning activities should be designed according to students’ ability in understand the material delivered by the teacher. Moreover, this study found some teacher’s challenges in teaching and learning process. Those challenges come from student’s ability, limited time, and school facilities. The application of techniques in teaching activities should be adapted to the conditions of students to achieve their learning goals, therefore the teacher need to implement the appropriate technique by modifying the teaching technique with the help of teaching media.
