Abstract
This study was aimed at describing: a) the stereotyped concepts of gender and ; b) the deconstructions toward the stereotyped concepts of gender represented in Indonesian EFL textbook. Applying qualitative research design by Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014), a textbook entitled When English Rings A Bell” for the Seventh Grade of Junior High School was analyzed. The dialogue, narrative and illustration of the book were analysed in terms of how they represent gender constructs using the deficit, dominance, and difference approaches as proposed by Lakoff (1975), Cameron (2003) and Tannen (1990). The result of the study revealed that the textbook remained to contain the stereotyped concepts of gender from language and visual image aspects. From language aspects, three categories were identified, namely (1) deficit language of women which consisted of the use of lexical hedges and fillers, the use of empty adjectives, and the use of intensifier; (2) male domination which consisted of male domination in the conversation and the ‘male firstness’ pattern of mentioning names; (3) different communication styles which consisted of the choice of topic and the focus of conversation. From visual image aspects, three categories were identified, namely (1) the physical appearance of the characters; (2) the attribute associated with certain gender; (3) the illustration of action and activities. Although the textbook contained stereotype concepts, there were also attempts to deconstruct the stereotypes from language aspect, such as (1) the deconstruction of conflict vs. compromise; (2) the deconstruction towards the use of tag question. From visual image aspects, the deconstruction was found on the illustration of action and activities such as (1) profession; (2) activities. Therefore, it can be concluded that the textbook attempted to deconstruct the concept of language and gender although remains confirmed the stereotypes. It implies that teachers should be more critical in selecting appropriate learning materials which represent gender equality. Key words: textbooks, gender, EFL, junior high school
