Abstract

ABSTRACT Language and culture are intertwined; thus, English textbooks contain cultural contents. This study aimed at analyzing the cultural content, source of cultures, and their portrayal in two English textbooks. The content analysis method, based on the three coding schemes: seven themes of cultural contents, three types of cultural sources, and positive and negative portrayal, was adopted to codify the cultural contents. The study results showed that cultural contents, values, beliefs, and behaviors appeared more frequently than everyday living. Meanwhile, life conditions, social conventions, and body language were under-presented; there were found for interpersonal relation and ritual behavior. Concerning cultural sources, both English textbooks emphasized target culture than source culture and international culture. Concerning the portrayal of cultural sources, the negative depiction of three cultural sources stressed race equality (apartheid), lack of economic conditions, discrimination, racialism, poverty, bullying, and social class classification types of profession. The positive portrayal of culture emphasized nationalism, the environmental issue and global warming, the invention in information and technology, modern advertising, and literature for the target culture. Source culture highlighted the economy, emancipation, politic, engineering, wildlife conservation, sports, and arts. Sports, music, tourism objects, and cultural heritage represented international culture. Based on these findings, the cultural content, source culture, and portrayal presented in this textbook are discussed. Then suggestions are given with the expectation that English textbooks used in the learning process can present balanced cultural contents to allow learners to obtain cultural knowledge.
