Abstract

This study aimed at developing the English e-media Teaching Materials for Front Office Students at Apollonia Hotel School in Denpasar, describing how the materials were developed, and analyzing the quality of the developed materials. This study used DDE model suggested by Richey & Klein (2014) comprising design, and development and evaluation. The instruments used were document analysis, questionnaires, interview guides, and checklist. The findings of this study consisted of 12 topics needed to be developed. Those topics are Front Office Knowledge and Types of Room, Front Office Department Organization Chart and Greeting, Welcoming and Spelling with Phonetic Alphabet, Reservation, Telephone Courtesy, Expressing Preference, Pre Arrival, Arrival and Check-In Procedure, Occupancy, Asking and Giving Suggestion. Check Out Procedure, Revenue and Sales Indicator. These topics were chosen based on the result of questionnaire, interview, printed material and SKKNI. Each topic was developed into teaching materials and designed by following the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) material design as suggested by Hutchinson and Waters (2008) which included input, content focus, language focus and task. Since English for Front Office is part of ESP, that is, under the English for Occupational Purposes, the effectiveness of the developed materials was evaluated using the criteria of good ESP materials suggested by Litz (2005), Hutchinson and Waters (2008), and Tomlinson (2009). After gaining the scores from the expert judges, the data then used the categorization of good teaching materials proposed by Nurkancana and Sunartana (2011). The quality of the developed materials was categorized as good material.
