Abstract

Language and culture are closely related; therefore, language learning cannot be separated from the introduction of the culture of the target language. Thus, when Indonesian is taught as a foreign language (Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing/BIPA), there is a need to introduce Indonesian culture to international students. Indonesia is well known for its cultural diversity. Therefore, international students who decide to take Indonesian courses in each province would have contact with the local culture; for example, BIPA students studying Indonesian in Bali would face the Balinese culture. This study aims to develop E-Bipa contextual teaching material integrated with Balinese local culture. In this study, the cultural theory used is the theory of Byram (1989) which proposes eight cultural components that can be found in the text. The source of this research data is the mapping of Indonesian language competency standards from Bahasa Indonesia Bagi penutur asing (BIPA) at the intermediate level designed by Pusat Pengembangan Strategi dan Diplomasi Kebahasaan Badan Pengembangan dan Pembinaan Bahasa Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan in 2016 and BIPA freelance teachers in Singaraja. They provide input on the contents of the compiled teaching material. The researcher used research and development (R&D) methods in this study. This method is used because this research focuses on product development in contextual Balinese BIPA teaching material. While the theory used is the theory of Thiagarajan et al. (1974) using a model known as the 4-D Model, which is carried out through 4 stages: defining, designing, developing, and disseminating. However, researchers only research up to the developing stage until the limitation of time caused by the COVID-19 pandemic that is currently happening. The quality results from the experts in this study indicate that the E-BIPA Contextual Teaching Material Integrated with Balinese local culture can already be used as supporting teaching material in the teaching and learning process by teachers and students. There are four things that the expert assesses, namely teaching material content, teaching material language, teaching material presentation, and teaching material design. Experts have considered all content quality results indicating that this teaching material is feasible to use.
