Abstract
The present study aimed at finding out the forms and functions of the use of swear words uttered by children in Dangin Sema community. The study applied qualitative research design. There were three instruments used in this study, namely the researcher, observation sheet, and interview guide using observing and interviewing techniques. After obtaining the data, the data were then analyzed using Miles and Huberman interactive data analysis. The results of the study showed that there were two main results of the study, namely forms and functions of swear words. It showed that there were three forms of swear words including 30 words, 10 phrases, and 3 clauses. In addition, four functions of swear words used in the conversation including abusive, cathartic, expletive, and idiomatic swearing. The results of the study can give contribution to linguistic field especially on sociolinguistic study in providing real examples of the use of swear words.
