Abstract
The study aimed to investigate the Student’s Approach to Learning (SAL) and identify the supporting and inhibiting factors of SAL. The researcher used a deductive mixed method. The participants of this research were 10th grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Singaraja. There were 200 respondents participating in the questionnaire and 8 students in the voluntary interview. The research used the R-SPQ-2F questionnaire and a semi-structured interview guide as the instruments. The content validity of both the questionnaire and interview are high. Using SPSS 25, each statement of the questionnaire validity is determined with the result of 19 valid items. The reliability of 20 survey statements is reliable. The data result is analyzed using the scoring system of R-SPQ-2F questionnaire while the interview is analyzed using the Interactive Model Analysis. The findings showed that students have the tendency to use surface approach in the context of learning English as Foreign Language (EFL) in online learning during the pandemic situation. The result of the survey is supported with the result of the interview as it was found that the inhibiting factors that prevent students to adopt deeper learning approach affect them far more than the supporting factors. The supporting factors were a high interest to meaningfully understand the material, incorporation of hobbies and interesting media in learning, friends who accompany the language learning process, as well as practices and materials outside the classroom. The inhibiting factors were misuse of technology as learning tools, lack of practice in online classes, shyness to speak up and be active, workload from other subjects, and teacher-dependency. It can be concluded that during the pandemic students lean towards surface approach as the inhibiting factors affect them more than the supporting ones. It is suggested for further research to explore more as the current research is limited to the condition of the 10th grade students in SMA Negeri 1 Singaraja and due to SAL being a dynamic learning factor.
