Abstract

The study aimed at describing the kinds of communication strategy that was used by the English teacher in Sun Lingua Collage (S/L/C) Singaraja. This research is a descriptive qualitative study that took place in Sun Lingua Collage (S/L/C) Singaraja. The obtained data are collected based on two techniques, namely: observation and recording technique. There are three steps of analyzing the data, those are: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verifying. The results of this study show that the kind of communication strategy that are used by the English Teacher in Sun Lingua Collage (S/L/C) Singaraja were: literal translation (35.1%); code-switching (24.4%); using gambits, fillers or hesitation device (17.9%); self and other repetition (17.9%); self-initiated repair (7.1%); and meaning negotiation (9.5%). The reason that underlying the used of communication strategy were to make sure that the students have understood the instruction or the explanation of the particular topics; to avoid conversation breakdown; gaining some time to think about the topics that should be discussed; revised the wrong pronunciation or expression or explanation that have been uttered.
