Abstract

THE IDENTIFICATION OF 18 VALUES OF CHARACTER EDUCATION IN SOPHIE’S CHARACTERS IN THE ROALD DAHL’S THE BFG By Made Ananthya Pramesuari Kieni, NIM 1912021026 English Language Education ABSTRACT Building good character is important from a young age, and it can be done through literary works. This study aims to analyzed the reflection of eighteen values recommended by the Ministry of Education (2010) for building students’ characters in the characterizations of Sophie as the main character in Roald Dahl’s novel entitled The BFG. This research used an interactive qualitative analysis model proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014) that contains three core processes: data collection and condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing.. The analysis revealed that Sophie was a honest, curious, caring, sincere, loyal, creative, polite, and helpful character. Furthermore, Sophie’s characters reflect the eighteen values of character education recommended by The Ministry of National Education (2010). The values were Friendly/communicative, honest, curious, social care, responsible, peace-loving, creative, patriotic, nature-loving, discipline, hardworking, autonomous, democratic, nationalist, tolerant, appreciation in achievement, religious, bibliophile. With the contents of character values represented by Sophie in Roald Dahl’s novel, the present study implies that Roald Dahl’s The BFG could be used as a reading material for children for introducing good values and developing their characters. IDENTIFIKASI 18 NILAI PENDIDIKAN KARAKTER PADA KARAKTER SOPHIE DALAM ROALD DAHL’S THE BFG Oleh Made Ananthya Pramesuari Kieni, NIM 1912021026 Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris ABSTRAK Membangun karakter yang baik penting dilakukan sejak dini dan dapat dilakukan melalui karya sastra. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis refleksi delapan belas nilai yang direkomendasikan Kementerian Pendidikan Nasional (2010) untuk membangun karakter siswa dalam penokohan Sophie sebagai tokoh utama dalam novel Roald Dahl berjudul The BFG. Penelitian ini menggunakan model analisis kualitatif interaktif yang dikemukakan oleh Miles, Huberman, dan Saldana (2014) yang berisi tiga proses inti: pengumpulan dan kondensasi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Analisis tersebut mengungkapkan bahwa Sophie adalah seorang yang jujur, ingin tahu, peduli. , berkarakter ikhlas, setia, kreatif, santun, dan suka menolong. Lebih lanjut, karakter Sophie mencerminkan delapan belas nilai pendidikan karakter yang direkomendasikan oleh Kementerian Pendidikan Nasional (2010). Nilai-nilai tersebut adalah Ramah/komunikatif, Jujur, Rasa Ingin Tahu, Peduli Sosial, Tanggung Jawab, Cinta Damai, Kreatif, Patriotik, Cinta Alam, Disiplin, Pekerja Keras, Mandiri, Demokratis, Nasionalis, Toleran, Apresiasi Berprestasi, Religius, Bibliofil. Dengan kandungan nilai-nilai karakter yang diwakili oleh Sophie dalam novel Roald Dahl, penelitian ini menyiratkan bahwa The BFG karya Roald Dahl dapat digunakan sebagai bahan bacaan bagi anak-anak untuk mengenalkan nilai-nilai baik dan mengembangkan karakternya. Kata Kunci: karakter, pendidikan karakter, delapan belas nilai pendidikan karakter, novel.
