Abstract

This study concerns developing CLIL-based English learning materials for the Hindu Education Department students in Hindu Universities in Bali. It aims at 1) investigating the student needs of topics related to Hindu contents, 2) developing CLIL-based English learning materials, 3) examining the quality of the developed CLIL-based English learning materials, and 4) analyzing the effectiveness of the developed CLIL-based English learning materials for Hindu Education Department in Hindu Universities. The present study was designed in research and development using ADDIE Model integrated with 4 Pillars in CLIL: Content, Communication, Cognition, and Culture. The total subjects were 157, involving Hindu religious experts, English lecturers, and students in 5 Hindu Universities in Bali. The research instruments were document analysis, interviews, questionnaires, and tests. The study results show 1) the Hindu topics needs to be included in the product are Three Religious Hindu Frameworks—Tattwa, Susila, and Acara. Tattwa includes beliefs in a) Brahman, b) Atman, c) Punarbhawa, d) Karma Phala, and e) Moksa. Susila includes sub-theme Tri Kaya Parisudha includes ethics in a) Kayika Parisudha, b) Wacika Parisudha, c) Manacika Parisudha. Acara includes Panca Yadnya consisting of Dewa Yadnya, Rsi Yadnya, Pitra Yadnya, Manusa Yadnya, and Bhuta Yadnya; 2) the procedure of development involved five stages, namely: Analyzing to identify the student’s needs, Designing learning materials in CLIL approach which consider the 4C components including content, cognition, communication, and culture, testing the quality of the product which involving students, lecturers, and expert to validate the quality of the product, Implementing the product at the Hindu Universities in Bali, Evaluating to see the effectiveness of the learning materials; 3)The findings demonstrate that the quality by using the likert scale 1-5 of the developed product has excellent category with the overall score of 4.6 from the English lectures and 4.7 from students; and 4) the developed product is found to be effective to enhance student’s English language skills and their content knowledge about the Three Religious Hindu Framework.
