Abstract

This study aims to analyze the linguistic situation in Amed, namely to determine linguistic contestation, language policy implementation, and language attitudes. This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data collection was done by observation, documentation, and interview. Data on language contestation and language policy were analyzed using Landry and Bourhis' (1997) theory, and Li and Wei's (2022) theory was used to analyze language attitude data. The results of this study found that there are several language variations that appear on outdoor media in Amed, namely Balinese, Indonesian, English, French, Russian, Italian, and Balinese script. Of all the language variations found, English is the language that dominates the highest influence in outdoor media texts. Related to the implementation of language policy, the implementation of national and local language policy has been implemented by the community and the government as evidenced by the emergence of Indonesian language writing and Balinese script. However, it is found that there are some outdoor media that are not in accordance with existing language policy, both local and national language policy. This phenomenon is evidenced by the emergence of outdoor media that use foreign languages that are relevant to the language contestation found. Regarding the language attitude of the community, in general they use these languages based on their purpose and benefits in certain situations. Broadly speaking, Balinese, Indonesian and English as foreign languages have their own priorities in various subfields of the informants' lives, but they still appreciate and try to use all three languages positively.
