Abstract

This study aimed at developing a digital interactive media for teaching basic English literacy and communication to young learners with ASD by using ADDIE development model. The analysis phase was conducted by selecting suitable theories of digital interactive media specifications based on young learners with ASD characteristics. Then, the design phase involved the selection of activities that covered reading, writing and speaking, while the material consisted of five topics: ‘My Body, My Hobby, My Family, My House and My Daily Activities’. Those activities and materials were inserted into the media. The developed media was implemented to teach three students from Indonesia and three students from Malaysia. Before implementing the media there were quality testing conducted by involving four experts to check the media and content validity. It was done to ensure that the development phase was successful or not. The result of media quality showed a very good score which means it can be used to teach basic English literacy and communication to young learners with ASD in both countries. The implementation and evaluation phases followed the procedure of single subject research (SSR) with A-B design. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected with observation and progress records. Qualitative data were analysed by using category analysis and quantitative data were analysed by using trend analysis. The result showed that qualitatively, the improvement from the category of being able to do the instruction but needs to be stimulated several times by the teacher (√) to be able to do the instruction with one stimulation by the teacher (+) until willing to do the instruction by himself (++). Then, quantitatively, the improvement was proven from the trend analysis or directional tendency of baseline phase and intervention phase. Each sample reached five (+5) points improvement from the baseline and intervention phases and ten (+10) to thirty (+30) points within intervention phases. It means that improvements happen significantly during the intervention phase.
