Abstract
ABSTRACT Diarrhea remains a major health challenge among school-aged children and is closely associated with personal hygiene behaviors, particularly handwashing with soap (HWWS). This study aimed to analyze the relationship between handwashing with soap behavior and the incidence of diarrhea among students in grades IV–VI at SD Negeri 3 Banjar Jawa. The study employed an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach and involved 54 respondents selected using stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a handwashing with soap behavior questionnaire and identification of diarrhea episodes within the past three months. The results of the Chi-Square statistical test showed a significant relationship between handwashing with soap behavior and the incidence of diarrhea (χ² = 22.691; p = 0.001), indicating that good handwashing practices are associated with a lower risk of diarrhea. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening handwashing education programs, ensuring adequate sanitation facilities, and promoting the involvement of parents and educators in fostering clean and healthy living behaviors among school-aged children.
