Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the causes of reading comprehension difficulties among Grade 4 young learners in primary school. This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive qualitative research design to obtain an in-depth understanding of students’’ reading comprehension difficulties based on their actual learning conditions in the classroom. The qualitative approach was selected because this study aimed to explore and interpret the factors contributing to students’’ difficultiesrather than measure students’’ reading comprehension abilities statistically. Thepopulation in this study consisted of all Grade IV students’ at Dynata School, while the participants were ten Grade IV students’ from classes 4A and 4B and one English teacher as a supporting informant selected through purposive sampling. The research data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with the English teacher. Classroom observations were conducted to identify students’’ behaviors, responses, and difficulties during reading comprehension activities, while interviews were used to explore the teacher’s perspectives regarding the factors influencing students’’ reading comprehension difficulties. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis, which involved organizing, coding, categorizing, and interpreting the data to identify themes related to the causes of students’’ reading comprehension difficulties. The results of the study show that students’’ reading comprehension difficulties are influenced by several factors, namely linguistic, cognitive, psychological, environmental, and instructional factors. Linguistic factors are shown through limited vocabulary knowledge and English pronunciation difficulties. Cognitive factors are related to students’’ difficulties in processing information, determining main ideas, drawing conclusions, and answering questions requiring deeper comprehension. Psychological factors, including lack of confidence, anxiety in using English, and low involvement during reading activities, also affect students’’ reading comprehension processes. In addition, environmental and instructional factors influence students’’ opportunities to develop reading comprehension skills. The findings indicate that reading comprehension difficulties among Grade IV students’ at Dynata School are not only caused by limitations in language knowledge but also result from the interaction of cognitive, psychological, environmental, and instructional factors. This study provides implications for teachers and schools to develop reading comprehension strategies that consider students’’ needs and characteristics and to create a supportive learning environment that encourages the development of students’’ reading comprehension skills.
