Abstract

This study investigates the impact of e-portfolio assessment integrated with generative AI assistance on speaking performance, feedback literacy, willingness to communicate, and psychological well-being of vocational students. The current research fills a gap in the literature, as most studies on AI-assisted language learning only consider a single outcome variable and do not look at the cognitive, communicative, and psychological outcomes as a whole system. The study was carried out at Politeknik Negeri Bali and applied an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, which involved a quasi-experimental phase and a qualitative phase. In the quantitative phase, 120 second-semester students of International Business Management were selected as the sample through cluster random sampling. The experimental group underwent a Padlet-based e-portfolio cycle supported by Gemini AI through guided implementation over four instructional topics, while the control group was taught through conventional presentation and role-play activities with unguided use of ChatGPT. A one-way MANCOVA was performed, using pretest scores as covariates, to test for differences in the effects of the treatments on the dependent variables. The analysis revealed a statistically significant multivariate effect: Wilks Lambda = 0.249, F (4, 111) = 83.849, p < 0.001, which also featured a large effect size, partial eta squared = 0.751. Subsequent univariate tests confirmed significant gains for all four dependent variables. Feedback literacy showed the largest individual effect size, followed by willingness to communicate, psychological well-being, and speaking performance. This hierarchy is different from what is usually found in AI-assisted speaking research, where gains in speaking performance tend to be most prominent. In the qualitative phase, a reflexive thematic analysis of interviews and reflective journals from six purposively selected students led to the generation of six themes and twenty subthemes. These findings were synthesized into the AI-Assisted E-Portfolio Empowerment Model, which maps the developmental phases students experienced throughout the intervention. The above two arms of the study shed light on the size of the gain as well as the factors that contribute to it, hence, providing rich theoretical, pedagogical, and institutional implications for the integration of generative AI into vocational EFL assessment.
