Abstract
Non-verbal communication is as important as verbal communication. In fact, people coming from different cultural background often suffer from miscommunication due to unsuccessful non-verbal communication. Regarding that, this descriptive qualitative research aimed at investigating, analyzing and comparing the non-verbal communication between Balinese and German. The theory proposed by Schmitz (2012) was used as guidelines in categorizing the non-verbal communication of both parties. This study used interview and observation as the method of data collection. The results showed that the similarities of non-verbal communication conducted by Balinese and German were regarding the use of Kinetics, Vocalics, Proxemics, and Chronemics. Meanwhile, the differences were about the use of Kinetics especially the use of gesture to express ok and eye contacts, Haptics, Vocalics especially about the use of vocalic cues to contradict and the use of verbal fillers to substitute words, and Proxemics especially about the way to mark territoriality.
