Abstract
Abstrak Kata Kunci: bahasa pertama, sikap dosen, sikap siswa, pengajaran bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi: (1) mengapa dosen dan siswa menggunakan (atau tidak menggunakan) bahasa Indonesia dalam proses belajar mengajar bahasa Inggris; (2) bagaimana dosen menggunakan bahasa Indonesia dlam prosesbelajar mengajar bahasa Inggris; (3) untuk mengetahui sikap dosen dan siswa terhadap penggunaan bahasa Indonesia. Penelitian dilakukan di Politeknik Negeri Bali, yang melibatkan 5 dosen dan 64 siswa. Peneliti mengumpulkan data menggunakan kuisioner dan observasi yang dikembagkan berdasar teori-teori tentang keunggulan dan kelemahan penggunaan bahasa pertama dalam kelas EFL. Data yang berasal dari kuisioner dianalisa secara quantitatif dengan menghitung hasil/skor kuisioner. Kemudian hasil akhir dari skor tersebut diktegorikan menggunakan tabel yang disusun berdasarkan referensi asesmen dari teori yang ideal. Kemudian hasil dari observasi dianalisa secara kualitatif dengan menggunakan analisis data interaktif. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dosen menggunakan bahasa Indonesia dalam proses pembelajaran EFL dalam bentuk code-switching, code-mixing, and interpreting,dosen menggunakan L1 dalam proses pembelajaran EFL untuk tujuan instruksional, dan siswa beserta dosen memiliki sikap atau pandangan yang positif terhadap pemakaian bahasa Indonesia. Dari hasil penelitian tersebut disarankan bahwa penggunaan L1dalam proses pembelajaran EFL dapat dilakukan untuk tujuan instruksional, tapi dosen harus mempertimbangkan kemampuan bahasa inggris siswa dalam penggunaan L1. Karena penelitian ini merupakan deskriptif kualitatif maka hasil penelitian hanya menggambarkan situasi di Politeknik Negeri Bali. Maka dari itu penelitian kuantitatiflebih lanjut diperlukan untuk mengetahui efektifitas penggunaan L1 dalam proses pembelajaran EFL. Abstract Keywords: first Language, lecturers' attitude, students' attitude, teaching English as a foreign language This study aims to identify: (1) why lecturers and students use (or do not use) Indonesian Language in the English language teaching-learning processes; (2) how the lecturers use the Indonesian Language in the English language teaching-learning processes; and (3) to find out the lecturers’ and students’ attitudes towards the use of Indonesian Language. The study was conducted at Politeknik Negeri Bali, which involved five lecturers and 64 students. The researcher collected the data using questionnaires and observations developed using the theories of the advantages and disadvantages of using L1 in EFL class. The data from the questionnaire were analyzed quantitatively by quantifying the result of the questionnaire and finding the final score of the questionnaire. Then, the final score was categorized using a categorization table that was made using the theoretical ideal reference assessment. While the result of the observation was analyzed qualitatively using the interactive data analysis. The results of the study show that: the lecturers used the Indonesian Language in the teaching and learning process of EFL in the form of code-switching, code-mixing, and interpreting, the lecturers use L1 in the teaching and learning process of EFL for instructional purposes, and both the students and the lecturers had a positive attitude toward the use of the Indonesian Language. From the result of the study, it is suggested that using L1 in the teaching and learning process of EFL can be done for instructional purposes, but lecturers need to consider students' English level mastery in deciding the use of L1 in the teaching and learning process of EFL. Since this study was conducted in the form of a descriptive qualitative study, the study's result only described the situation at Politeknik Negeri Bali. Thus, to get a more comprehensive result, a further quantitative study is needed to find out the effectiveness of using L1 in the teaching and learning process of EFL.
