Abstract

This study intended to develop an android-based application for English spelling learning media for the seventh-grade students in SMP Negeri 2 Tabanan. This study used design and development by Richey et al. (2014) which consists of three steps that is Design, Development, and Evaluation. The subject of this research is the seventh-grade students and English teacher of SMP Negeri 2 Tabanan, and integrated technology experts while the object is the Android-based English Spelling Learning Media for the seventh-grade students in SMP Negeri 2 Tabanan. The instrument used in this study were a questionnaire, interview guide, design evaluation sheet and product evaluation sheet to collect the data. The data was analyzed by three models that is Interactive Data Analysis Model, Inter-rater Agreement Model, and Theoretical Ideal Reference Assessment. The results showed that students had a problem with spelling. However, the motivation to have Android application implemented in spelling learning was high because students agreed upon the criteria of good teaching media while the teacher require solution to lack of teaching time allocation. The material developed in this study was limited to spelling material taken from seventh-grade syllabus and was developed in Android application namely Quizlet. The product material taken from student books, worksheets example given by the teacher, and the internet was typed onto Quizlet. The application was tested and evaluated by 1 English teacher and 2 integrated technology experts to find out the quality. The quality of the application got a high score from experts, which was categorized in the very good category. It can be used by student to increase engagement and find control the suitable ways for themselves to learn while teacher can use it to bring excitement toward students in class.
