Abstract

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SCAFFOLDING STRATEGIES FOR TEACHING ENGLISH ONLINE TO JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS By: Ni Putu Dewi Ersani, NIM 1929081040 ABSTRACT The present research aims at measuring the effectiveness of scaffolding strategies for teaching English online to junior high school students. This study also investigates students’ opinion regarding the implementation of scaffolding strategies in online English class. In this study, the sample is students of class IX J which consists of 35 students (male = 17, female =18). The group was chosen through cluster random sampling out of the 11 ninth-grade classes of SMP Negeri 1 Mengwi. The design implemented was embedded mixed method, in which the data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. At the beginning of the semester, a pretest was administered to identify students’ initial achievement. Afterwards, four types of online scaffolding strategies were implemented. The scaffolding strategies were developed using Hannafin, Land, and Oliver’s (1999) framework of online scaffolding. At the end of the semester, the same test was administered as a posttest. The mean scores of pretest and posttest were analyzed using paired sample t-test. Further, students’ opinions regarding the four types of scaffolding are collected using a questionnaire with dichotomous and open-ended questions. The quantitative result shows that the implementation of scaffolding strategies brings a significant effect towards students’ achievement in English (t = -13.166, sig. = 0.00) in a positive way. From the qualitative analysis it can be concluded that students have positive opinions regarding the implementation of scaffolding strategies in online classroom. Therefore, the implementation of scaffolding strategies in teaching English online is proven to be effective.
