Abstract
This research focused on the designing of literature-based instruction materials for sixth grade students of elementary school through stories. The method of this research was Design and Development. In developing literature-based instruction materials, this research used DnD model by Richey and Klien (2007). The materials were designed in the form of thematic stories of character with careful choice of language to suit the student’s language development. It was carried out through the following steps: 1) Analyzing thematic syllabus of sixth grade students to get the topics for materials; 2) Designing to develop blueprint of the literature-based instruction materials and designing English short stories and mini lesson plans by combining the result of analysis and mapping out from the thematic syllabus; 3) Developing English short story and mini lesson plan to become printed materials book for sixth grade students of elementary school; and 4) Evaluating the results of English short story and mini lesson plan. The result of the syllabus analysis indicated the need of materials with ten different character values, so that ten short stories were developed. The results of evaluation from experts concluded that the quality of the books developed was very good.
