Abstract

English writing is classified as one of the hardest skills to be mastered by the students. This phenomenon increases the students’tendency to perform errors in their writing even though they perform well in speaking. As the response of this phenomenon, this research aimed at investigating the types of error performed by tenth grade students of SMK Pariwisata triatma Jaya Singaraja. By involving 23 students of Class X Accomodation 3, this qualitative study employed two major instruments to collect the data, namely the researcher and the students’ descriptive text. The collected data were analyzed using Interactive Model Analysis. From 46 students’ descriptive text, 471 errors were identified committed by 21 students and the remaining 2 student commited writing mistake. The entire error were indentified into 10 types of writing error namely, Capitalization (Cap) with 186 errors (39.4%), then followed by Adding “a” article (^) with 54 errors (11.4%), Omitting “a” Article (x) with 48 errors (10.3%), Word Form (wf) with 33 errors (7%), Pronoun (Pro) with 32 errors (6.8%), Unclear Meaning (Unm) with 31 errors (6.6%), Verb Tense (vt) with 31 error (6.6%), Run-on Sentence (Ro) with 18 errors (3.3%), Punctuation (P) with 26 errors (5.5%), and the least identified error was Spelling (Sp) with 10 errors (2.2%). Meanwhile the other three types of error were not identified, namely singular plural, preposition, and word order. Therefore, the most frequent error commited by the students based on the classification of error theory proposed by Azar (1999) and Zawahre (2012) was Capitalization error with 186 errors (39.4%). This error caused by intralingual error, in which the students tend to ignore the rule restriction of the target language. It proves that capitalization error tends to be overlooked by the EFL learning as writing errors because the students ignore the rule of capitalization and do not have enough knowledge regarding Capitalization rule.
