Abstract

Extended changes have been made to the education paradigm as a result of the covid-19 pandemic; the traditional pattern of learning has been unexpectedly replaced by online learning. Difficulties have hampered the education sector, including learning loss, which was previously regarded as lost competence owing to brain traumas, but is now associated with the accumulated impacts of a prolonged gap in the education system. Based on the findings of a preliminary study conducted at SMP PGRI 8 Denpasar, one of the private secondary schools in the capital city of Bali, Indonesia, this research attempted to describe the learning loss caused by sudden transitions during pandemic learning conditions. The investigation was conducted using a case-study research approach with around 200 eighth-grade students and approximately 10 teachers from SMP PGRI 8 Denpasar during the academic year 2021/2022. The research was conducted qualitatively using collective observations, questionnaires, and interviews that were processed using interactive data analysis and triangulated under data, subjects, and methods triangulation techniques. According to the results, during the learning transitions triggered by the pandemic covid-19; loss of cognitive development, social interaction, and motivation to learn were hampered for the investigated learners. Throughout the transitions, both teachers and learners have met many obstacles relating to the digital divide, learning autonomy, and the issue of online learning experiences. The teachers who were investigated provided a number of ways to mitigate the impacts of learning loss, as well as concerns related to the learners’ learning issues.
