Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate the speech act in the Avengers Infinity War Movie. The analysis is focused on the type of illocutionary acts that are produced by movie characters and the direct indirect act of the found speech acts. This study conducted the descriptive qualitative method as the result of the research is in form of words description and the main source of the data was the movie itself. The objects of the study were the utterances produced by the characters, and the subject was the movie characters of both the superheroes (Avengers) and the supervillain (Thanos). The instruments of the study were the researcher‟s interpretation and the observation sheet. Using Searle‟s theory (1969), the illocutionary act types were determined by considering the felicity conditions of each utterance and found the result that the five types of illocutionary acts are produced in this movie which are representative, directive, commissive, declarative, and expressive acts. It also discovered that the data are dominated by the direct speech acts. Furthermore, this analysis conducted to be an additional study reference for those who want to learn about the speech act in the movie content.
