Abstract

This study aims to investigate the significant effect of the TBLT-based digital storybook on students’ English Competence simultaneously and on four English language skills. This study is part of quasi-experimental research with the design post-test only control group. The population of this study was 264 eleventh-grade students in SMA N 1 Busungbiu and by using cluster random sampling 63 students from two classes that declared normal and homogeneous were selected as samples. The data of this study was obtained using three instruments: a lesson plan, a post-test, and an assessment rubric, all of which were previously examined by two experts and found to be valid and reliable. The research was conducted in 5 meetings, consisting of 4 meetings for treatment and 1 meeting for conducting post-tests. After conducting a post-test, the data were analyzed using SPSS 27. Based on the descriptive and inferential statistical analysis, the findings showed that there are significant differences in students’ English competence simultaneously and in four English language skills between Experimental group and control group (Sig < 0.05). Students who taught using a TBLT-based digital storybook was outperformed students who taught using teacher's conventional method. The effect size calculation using partial ETA squared also showed a large effect of TBLT-based digital storybook on students' English competence and four English language skill (> 0.14), except for reading which showed a medium effect (< 0.14). These findings suggests that TBLT-based digital storybook are appropriate to utilize by teachers in the future for the teaching-learning process, as they can be used to improve students’ English competencies significantly.
