Abstract

This study aims to investigate the Language Learning Strategies (LLS) used by students of English Language Education Study Program in learning English and to describe the factors that affect the students' choice of strategies. This research uses mixed method. In this study, the total sampling is 95 from English education study program students. Data were collected through the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) version 7.0 questionnaire developed by Oxford (1994). The questionnaire was adapted and validated by 2 experts and were given to English education students. The quesionnaire consists of 50 statements which have six categories namely memory, cognitive, compensation. metacognitive, affective, and social. The results showed that the most frequently used strategy by English education students was metacognitive, and compensation as the lowest strategy used. Metacognitive, memory and cognitive strategy was applied with high frequency, and social, affective and compensation strategy were used with medium frequency. Factors that affected the choice of LLS were gender differences, semester differences, age differences, GPA differences and motivation differences.
