Abstract

This study aims to investigate the Language Learning Strategies (LLS) used by students in learning English and the factors that influence the selection of these strategies by Japanese Language Education students at Ganesha University of Education. This study used mixed methods in its process. A total of 55 active students from the Japanese Language Education study program participated in this study. Data were collected through the SILL questionnaire version 7.0 which was developed by Oxford and has gone through an adaptation process in accordance with the times, and validated by 2 experts. The questionnaire consists of 47 statements that have six categories of LLS namely memory, cognitive, compensatory, metacognitive, affective, and social. To find out the tendency of using LLS and also the factors that influence the use and selection of LLS, data analysis was carried out through Microsoft Excel. The results showed that of the six strategies in the process of learning English in college students, metacognitive, cognitive, affective, social, and memory strategies showed a high frequency, while the compensation strategy obtained a medium frequency. The factor that influences the selection of LLS is GPA differences.
