Abstract

This study aims to examine aspects of cohesion and coherence in descriptive paragraphs written by grade XI students of SMA Negeri 2 Gerokgak, employing a mixed-methods approach of sequential explanatory design. The population in this study were grade XI students in the 2024/2025 school year, and the sample was selected using a cluster random sampling technique through a lottery system. Based on the lottery, class XI-3, consisting of 28 students, was selected as the sample. The results show that most of the students' writing was quite coherent, as indicated by the student's average score of 68.43%. Most students demonstrated a basic ability to organize ideas through the use of topic sentences and supporting details, although some still struggled to maintain a logical flow and draw clear conclusions. In terms of cohesion, the most dominant type used was lexical cohesion (59.7%), followed by reference and conjunction (20% each), while Substitute (0.3%) and ellipsis were not used at all. The conclusion that can be drawn from this study is that although most students are able to write fairly coherent and cohesive paragraphs, further learning is still needed to expand the use of cohesion devices and improve the ability to compose paragraphs in a logical and structured manner. The findings highlight the importance of enhancing the teaching of cohesion and coherence in English writing instruction in schools.
