Abstract

This study examines the development and quality evaluation of English supplementary materials that incorporate global cultural content. Employing a developmental research model based on Branch (2009), the process encompassed five phases: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Participants included 25 fifth-grade students and one English teacher, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using content analysis, interviews, and questionnaires to ensure a comprehensive understanding. The materials were systematically developed, beginning with a blueprint that outlined culturally integrated topics, learning objectives, and activities that combined English language skills with global knowledge, behaviours, and artefacts. Designed using Canva, the materials featured a visually engaging layout and incorporated a guiding character, Squirrel, to enhance student interaction. Adapted from the textbook My Next Words, the content was further enriched with global cultural themes. Implementation in the classroom showed positive outcomes, with favourable responses from students, teachers, and expert reviewers. Evaluation results yielded an average score of 4.36, categorising the materials as “good” in terms of relevance, design, and cultural integration. These findings suggest that the developed materials are both pedagogically effective and supportive in fostering students’ English proficiency and global cultural awareness.
