Abstract

This study aims to 1) to investigate the language attitude of tenth-grade students toward English as a foreign language at SMA Negeri 2 Bangli. 2) to investigate the contribution of tenth-grade students' language attitude towards English in their speaking skills at SMA Negeri 2 Bangli. 3) to investigate factors influencing tenth-grade students' language attitudes toward English at SMA Negeri 2 Bangli. This study involved a sample of 180 students from Grade X of SMA Negeri 2 Bangli in the 2024/2025 academic year. This study used a mixed-method research design in an explanatory sequential research design. According to the mixed-method research design, qualitative and quantitative approaches were combined to answer the research questions in this study. Data were collected through a survey using a questionnaire adapted from Gardner (2004) and Siringo-ringo et al (2023), a performance test of students' speaking ability with the help of a rubric adopted from O'Malley & Pierce (1996), as well as a questionnaire and interview guide adapted from Getie (2020). The collected quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods and multiple linear regression analysis. Meanwhile, interview data were analyzed using methods adopted from the Miles and Huberman (1994) model. The results of this study indicate that 1) Students' language attitudes toward English tend to be positive in the cognitive component and negative in the affective and conative components. In general, the language attitudes of tenth-grade students toward English are positive language attitudes. 2) The three components of language attitude (cognitive, affective, and conative) contribute significantly to students' speaking ability. However, only the cognitive component was found to have a significant impact when tested separately. 3) Students' language attitudes are influenced by several factors, namely learner personality factors, learning environment, the role of teachers, and learning materials, parents' attitudes, peer group attitudes, and views toward native speakers of English itself.
