Abstract

The present study aimed to identify the essential needs for task-based e-learning materials for Business English for university students, develop the materials, and assess the developed product's quality, practicality, and effectiveness. Employing a mixed-method approach, the research utilized questionnaires and interview guides in collecting the data of the course needs and to evaluate the quality of the developed materials, and used a pre-experimental one-group pretest- posttest design to assess the effectiveness of the task- based e-learning materials on students' learning outcomes, along with a survey to gain feedbacks from both students and lecturers. The samples of the experiment consisted of 35 university students, who were selected through cluster sampling from intact groups. The findings identified seven essential tasks for the Business English course, including reading, writing, listening, speaking, document translation, business etiquette, and handling complaints. Based on data analysis, eight recommended topics were established, including handling clients 1, handling clients 2, meetings with clients, business presentations, writing for the company, English correspondence, handling telephone calls, and managing complaints. The results also indicated that the developed teaching materials possessed high quality and were practical to use. In addition, it also effectively enhanced students' performance in Business English. The integration of technology into the learning process increased student engagement and autonomy, while contextual reflections and task-based activities significantly impacted learning outcomes. This research contributes practically to the development of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) materials that align with workplace needs. Furthermore, course designers are encouraged to leverage these findings to improve the design and development of effective Business English materials for student learning.
