Abstract

Digital storytelling can be a powerful tool to enhance students’ speaking performance and to raise their self-efficacy. However, limited empirical studies have examined the effectiveness of this pedagogical approach in vocational high schools. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of ChatGPT-integrated digital storytelling on students’ speaking skills and self-efficacy. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design using a non-equivalent pre-test and post-test control group design. The participants were 30 tenth-grade students from a vocational school, consisting of 15 students in the experimental group and 15 students in the control group. The experimental group was taught using ChatGPT combined with digital storytelling, and the control group was taught using traditional storytelling. The students’ speaking proficiency was evaluated using an analytic speaking rubric which assessed pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and comprehension. Students’ self-efficacy was measured using a Likert-scale questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, tests of normality and homogeneity, Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA), and effect size analysis were used to analyse the gathered data. The results showed that the students who were taught by digital storytelling integrated with ChatGPT had significantly higher speaking achievement than those taught by traditional storytelling. This can be seen from the result of data analysis After controlling for the students’ pretest speaking scores, there was a statistically significant difference in post-test speaking scores between the experimental and control groups, F (1, 27) = 30.3, p < .001, partial η² = .529. Furthermore, the result of self-efficacy the Mann–Whitney U test showed that the U value was 0.00 and the significance level was p < 0.001. The result indicates that the use of ChatGPT-integrated digital storytelling has a strong and significant effect on students’ speaking skills and self-efficacy at vocational school.
