Abstract
The low level of students’ understanding in Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS), particularly in geography, indicates the need for innovative learning media that can present concepts in a concrete, visual, and interactive manner. This study aimed to analyze the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of Globe Augmented Reality (AR) as a learning medium to improve fifth-grade students’ understanding of geography. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the 4D model, which consisted of the define, design, develop, and disseminate stages. The research subjects consisted of 23 fifth-grade students. Data were collected through questionnaires, tests, interviews, and observations and were analyzed using quantitative descriptive, qualitative descriptive, and inferential analyses. The results showed that the Globe Augmented Reality medium received very good evaluations from experts in terms of development design, content, instructional design, and media quality. The medium was also considered highly practical by students in individual and small-group trials. In terms of effectiveness, the use of the medium resulted in improved students’ understanding, as indicated by higher learning outcomes after the implementation than before its use and by a statistically significant difference. These findings indicate that the integration of Augmented Reality technology through Globe AR can help concretize abstract geographical concepts and provide students with a more visual, interactive, and meaningful learning experience. The novelty of this study lies in the development of Globe Augmented Reality, which integrates a visual representation of the globe with AR technology as a geography learning medium for elementary school students. Therefore, Globe Augmented Reality is a valid, practical, and effective learning medium for supporting students’ understanding. Practically, the medium can serve as an alternative for teachers to utilize AR technology to visualize geographical concepts and create more interactive and meaningful IPAS learning.
