Abstract

Mixed marriage having different language background creates a bilingual environment to the child born in the family that stimulates the couple to find ways to transfer their languages to him. This simultaneous bilingual condition was also faced by a mixed married of a French-Indonesian husband and wife. The study investigated the family language use, especially the utterances in daily communication, family discourse strategies, and their perception of early bilingualism The data were obtained from natural conversations at house domain of the family members to their son who was 2;11 to 3;1 and a questionnaire. This family applied one person one language not in a strict way in which the father consistently spoke French, and mother and older sibling conversed in Bahasa Indonesia dominantly. They also infrequently used English as the common language of the family. Code-switching of the two dominant languages, shared family language, and her mother tongue, Javanese occurred in the family interactions. Besides, when the child did not use the preferred language of the parents and older sibling, they implemented discourse strategies: the mother applied to Move on, Translation request, and Modelling; the father used those three strategies including Adult code-switch/Code-switching, Minimal grasp, Expressed guess, and Repetition, and the older sibling implemented Translation request and Modelling. The mixed married couple’s positive perception of early bilingualism led them to raise the child in bilingual mode.
