Abstract

The identification of the real-world environment in the bestseller novel Crazy Rich Asians (2013) by Kevin Kwan provides the understanding that the great literary work is the mirror of a society which help the readers to gain new insights and use it as the source in the creative process of making any literary work. Through the qualitative research model by Miles, Huberman, & Saldana (2014) using cyclic process, this research aimed to identify the representation of the real-world environment that pictured within Crazy Rich Asians (2013) novel using a theory behind the process of making literary work by H.A. Taine (1980). This research found some representation based on the term race (nation), milieu (place), and moment (time). On the term race (nation), this research identified the representation of Mainland Chinese ethnicity, Singaporean Chinese ethnicity, and several real-life characters that inspired certain characters within the novel. On the term milieu (place), the place is divided into the physical environment and the psychological environment. The physical environment represents several real-world places namely Mayfair London, Cairnhill Road Apartment Singapore, Goodwood Hotel Orchard Road, Tyersall Park, and Cameron Highlands. While, the psychological environment is the social and political condition namely afternoon tea custom, cohabitation, sheng nu (leftover woman), and face savings. In the last term moment (time), this research identified the representation of the financial crisis 2008 in London and the bloom of tan hua. Therefore, regarding novel as imaginative work there are values of the author’s perspective that mirror his environment which represents certain communities, places, or certain phenomenon which beneficial to the readers for not only entertained but also gathering new insights.
