Abstract
This study aimed at analyzing the extensive reading the students in SMPN 1 Selemadeg Timur by describing what materials student read, motives and challenges. This study was in the form of descriptive qualitative study by involving 30 students of eight grade at SMPN 1 Selemadeg Timur. The data were obtained by conducting observation and survey. The instruments used were observation sheet and questionnaires. The obtained data were analysed by using qualitative data analysis in which the reliability and validity was checked through triangulation. The results showed that; 1) the English reading materials read by the students were the materials related to the school materials, fiction (story, novel), and news, 2) there were five motives in reading extensively, namely to gain experiences, to improve skills, knowledge, confidence, and ability, 3) the challenges faced by students were lack of vocabulary, pronunciation, and self-confidence.
