Abstract

This study aims to investigate parental involvement and explores their perceptions in supporting children's English literacy in grades 4th, 5th, and 6th using stories as the media of reading activities. This study employed explanatory sequential mixed methods design involving parents from SD Negeri 3 Banjar Jawa and SD Laboratorium Undiksha. The data obtained were analyzed statistically based on the results of calculations using the PAIT (Psychometric Analysis of Item Theory) and CTT (Classical Test Theory) method, which focuses more on the reliability and validity of the questionnaire. The results revealed that 93.6% of parents have very high involvement in setting high expectations in children's reading activities at home. In addition, parents also have high involvement in building a reading culture, providing reading facilities, providing support and motivation, and introducing character-building to children at home. However, the aspect as the model of love reading shows that 33.8% of parents are not actively involved in reading activities, which can be caused by some factors such as parent limited time in accompanying children to read books, lack of reading book sources, and environmental conditions which make children uncomfortable in reading books at home. Furthermore, parental involvement is also supported by results from parental perceptions, which indicate that parents have a positive perception of their engagement in reading activities at home. The result shows that cognitive engagement gives a very positive perception, while the behavioral and emotional aspects are classified into the positive category. In conclusion, parental involvement and their perceptions in using stories show that parents alone cannot develop children's English literacy at home due to challenges like lack of competency, busy schedules, and unsupportive environments. Moreover, parents need to offer an effective strategy to enhance literacy while strengthening emotional bonds and ensuring children feel loved and cared for despite their parents' busy lives.
