Abstract
Language attitude refers to an individual's feelings about or how he/she thinks with respect to one language. It is based on emotional and psychological, physical examination, belief, preference, and motive for using the language. On the other hand, language performance is language as used in reality by a human being, and is affected most largely by psychological, cognitive, and environmental factors. These problems are important for the bilingual learner's academic achievement because their educational environment varies greatly. This study investigated the language attitude and language performance of a mixed Indo-Filipino student exposed to English and Bahasa Indonesia in an Indonesian school. The purposes of this study are to investigate the language attitudes, to find out the factors that contribute the language attitude to a mixed Indo-Filipino student toward English and Bahasa Indonesia. In addition to examine the student’s language performance in the classroom, and also to provide insight into the challenges faced by mixed students during both lessons. Qualitative research was used to investigate the experience of a Grade 6 student at Widiatmika Elementary School in Bali who was raised in an English-speaking environment, but attended a school with an education system that uses Bahasa Indonesia. The data collection used in depth interviews, classroom observations, document analysis, and anecdotal records. The data in this study were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, such data reduction, data display and conclusing drawing. The results indicated that the student demonstrated generally positive attitudes toward both English and Bahasa Indonesia. However, the student demonstrated increased confidence, comfort, and engagement when using English, whereas decreased confidence, hesitation, and frequent code-switching when using Bahasa Indonesia. Several factors influenced the student's language attitudes, including language exposure, affective factors, linguistic competence, learning environment, instructional support, and learning preferences. The student’s language performance was stronger in reading than in speaking skills. Performance was consistently higher in English than in Bahasa Indonesia. Furthermore, the study found that affective factors, particularly low confidence and anxiety, along with limited vocabulary in Bahasa Indonesia and passive communication strategies, were the major challenges affecting classroom language use.
