Abstract

This study aims to analyze grammatical errors in English business correspondence used in WhatsApp communication by the employees of Sabu Art Shop, Sanur, Bali. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design. The instruments used was a checklist table. Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982) and James (1998). The findings revealed that omission was the most dominant type of error (16.96%), followed by prepositional errors (15.17%), misformation (14.28%), and addition, misordering, tense errors, and article errors, each accounting for 13.39% of the total identified errors. Furthermore, the analysis of error sources indicated that the grammatical errors were primarily influenced by both interlingual and intralingual factors. Interlingual errors were mainly reflected in the direct transfer of Indonesian lexical expressions into English, while intralingual errors resulted from incomplete mastery of English grammatical rules, including inappropriate lexical choice, incomplete sentence formation, and incorrect grammatical structures. The study concludes that grammatical errors may reduce the clarity and professionalism of business communication. Therefore, improving employees’ Business English proficiency through grammar-focused training and greater awareness of formal business correspondence is necessary to support more effective communication with international clients.
