Abstract
The biggest challenge any teacher faces is capturing the students’ attention, and putting across ideas in such a way that it stays with them even after they finish the education. Especially in foreign language learning, most young learners are reluctant to open their mind to new language that they are not familiar with. The use of innovative teaching methods in educational institutions has the potential not only to improve education but also create a new believe that learning foreign language can also be fun. The purpose of this paper are (1) to know the process of the implementation of innovative teaching methods to teach young learners and (2) know the achievement of students after the innovative teaching methods are implemented at North Bali Bilingual School. This paper was conducted using embedded mixed method design with qualitative analysis as a dominant design and supported with quantitative analysis for the more accurate result. The subjects of this paper were an English teacher and students from grade 1, 2, and 3. Meanwhile, the object of this paper was the innovative teaching methods that were used by the teacher to teach English. The results were (1) the implementation of the innovative teaching methods is based on three approaches such as differentiated instruction, Constructivism, and the Whole Person Approach. From the approaches, various methods are implemented through several activities and strategies / techniques of teaching. (2) The achievement of the students after the implementation of the methods are excellent that they are able to use the language properly in real life situations which was assessed using authentic assessments.. The authentic assessment that was done by the teacher really gave the students the opportunity to exhibit their real skills. Not just by giving the students tests, but also how they behaved during the class.
