Abstract
This study aimed at describing the English e-learning materials for bar department at Apollonia Hotel School in Denpasar. It describes how the materials were developed and analyzed in terms of the quality of the developed materials. Hanafin and Peck’s (2014) concept was used for comprising need assessment, design, development, and implementation which were followed with evaluation and revision. The researcher used document analysis, questionnaires, interview guides, and checklist as the instruments in this study. The findings of this study consisted of 12 topics needed to be developed. They were Bar Knowledge, Bar Organization Chart and Duties of Key Position, Types of Beverage, Method of Mixed Ingredients, Method of Making Mixed Drink, Bar Equipment, Bar Supplies, Handling Complaint, Asking, Accepting, Refusing Request, Explaining Menu, Greeting and Welcoming Guests, and Slang Language. The researcher followed English for Specific Purposes (ESP) material designed by Hutchinson and Waters (2008) which includs input, content focus, language focus and task designing the materials. Since English for Bar is part of ESP, that is, under the English for Occupational Purposes, the effectiveness of the developed materials was evaluated using the criteria of relevant ESP materials suggested by Litz (2005), Hutchinson and Waters (2008), and Tomlinson (2009). After gaining the scores from the expert judges, the data used then was categorized as relevant teaching materials as proposed by Nurkancana and Sunartana (2011). The quality of the developed materials was categorized as relevant learning material.
