Abstract

The goal of this study to determine if using a digital multilingual thematic dictionary significantly effects the literacy skills of fifth-graders students. The researcher determine to conduct quasi-experimental research with only pre-test and post-test control groups. The researcher determined the research sample using a multi-stage sampling technique that consisted of three stages namely: (1) determining population, (2) determining the sampling area using a statistical matching technique of Fraenkel, J.R, Wallen, N.E., & Hyun, H.H. (2012), and (3) determining the control and experimental groups through lottery. The sample consisted of fifth-grade students from SD N 1 Kubutambahan as the experimental group and 5A students from SD N 1 Seririt as the control group. The instruments used in this research were literacy skill tests containing pre-test and post-test questions and teaching scenarios for the control and experimental groups. The pre-test was given before treatment, and the post-test was given after treatment. Both groups received three sessions of treatment with three materials: daily activities, my school, and clothes. The obtained data were analyzed quantitatively with descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, and N-Gain score test analysis. The results of the analysis on the Independent Sample T-Test test were not significantly different from the 2 classes with Sig value. (2-tailed) of 0.170> 0.05. Based on the results of the N-Gain Score test calculation and descriptive analysis, the average N-Gain score of the experimental group was 70.5453%, while the average N-Gain score of the control group was 67.9676%. The results of the N-Gain score test show that the use of multilingual thematic digital dictionaries in the experimental group and the use of multilingual thematic printed dictionaries in the control group, both groups have the same effect, namely "moderately effective" in improving the reading skills of grade students, because the average score of the experimental group is 70.5% and the average of the control group is 68%. Thus, it can be concluded that digital and printed multilingual thematic dictionaries have a significant effect on the literacy skills of fifth grade students.
