Abstract
This study investigated the communication strategies used by teachers in inclusive EFL classrooms at SDN 2 Bengkala, Bali, focusing on deaf students. It aimed to identify the communication strategies used, the challenges faced, and the strategies employed to overcome these challenges. This study used a qualitative case study design, with data collected through classroom observations, interviews, and field notes and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed four main strategies: verbal communication, non-verbal communication, visual and sign language support, and multimodal communication. The main challenges were difficulties in communicating English through sign language and students’ emotional states and readiness to learn. To overcome these challenges, the teacher collaborated with a sign-language-proficient assistant, used visual media such as PowerPoint, pictures, and flashcards, and implemented motivational activities. Overall, the findings show that flexible and multimodal communication strategies can support student participation and understanding in inclusive EFL classrooms.
